We are delighted to share that the British Galleries Casson Mann designed for the V&A have officially turned 25!
Back in 2001, this monumental project (3000 objects spread across 3000m² of exhibition space) was one of Casson Mann's first ever large-scale assignments. It was the largest redisplay project undertaken by the V&A in 50 years - and since - covering over 10% of the museum's gallery space.
The project took on the ambitious challenge of telling the long history of British Art and Design from the Tudors to the Victorians. To that end, Casson Mann deployed all of the designers tools to bring those 400 years of political history to life. Fine art, architecture sets, textiles and drawings were brought together around one common design language, playing with colours, textures, pace and proportions. Visually rich displays were layered with tactile and olfactive offerings to paint a complete picture of those social and cultural changes.
25 years on, we are incredibly proud of the enduring success of the galleries and the way the ideas, design, material choices, detailing and build quality have stood the test of time. They continue to welcome millions of visitors every year and have informed much exhibition design since opening.
